SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS
Samuel Plato School of Workforce Development: The Samuel Plato School of Workforce Development will provide
skills needed in today's workforce, with a specific focus on the hospitality and construction
industries. The program will train and mentor individuals while eliminating barriers to the
successful transition into long-term employment and/or higher education. Hospitality Training Program The foodservice and hospitality industry provides the entire range of employment and training possibilities; from entry-level, part-time positions in restaurants, to executive positions at the top of corporations. High turnover and the need to provide excellent customer service in multicultural environment, this industry needs and has the desire to enhance the development of a previously untapped workforce. Construction Training Program The Construction Training Program will provide a wide range of training designed to enable local residents to enter the construction trades. The program will be comprised of community-based organizations, employers, educational and government agencies to ensure that local residents benefit from public and private construction job opportunities. GED Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Adult Basic Education and Simmons College of Kentucky began offering GED and skill-building classes in September 2006. These free classes help students refresh their math, reading and writing skills. By upgrading academic skills, students can better themselves educationally and socially. Not only is earning a GED important to an individual, but it is a benefit to the community as well. The better educated our workforce, the more attractive the city is to business. This could result in better availability of jobs and higher-paying earning opportunities within the community. Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and in the evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The classes are open entry, which means that new students are welcome anytime during the semester. It is never too late to enroll in the GED class at Simmons College of Kentucky. Call 485-3400 or come to class and we will help you get started on your rendezvous to greatness! Liberal Arts The liberal arts curriculum at Simmons College of Kentucky offers all students an introduction into the humanities (literature, music, languages, history, philosophy), mathematics (pre-algebra and algebra), the core sciences (natural and behavioral) and social sciences (sociology and political science). These classes are designed to give the student a well-rounded education foundation, to assist the student in the development of a lifelong love of learning, the ability to think critically and analyze, and provide a springboard for the pursuit of further study. Introductory (developmental and remedial) courses are routinely offered in writing and mathematics to bring student performance to a postsecondary standard. Theology Simmons College of Kentucky is dedicated to the training of leaders and ministry workers in the Kingdom of God. Through this dedication, the college's vision is to educate and train committed persons to the various responsibilities of ministry: Preaching, Christian Education, Counseling, Social Work and Christian Journalism. |
