From 8:00 am – 1:00 pm, we will observe Constitution Day. From 8:00 am – 1:00 pm, we will observe Constitution Day. Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

 

This year Simmons College of Kentucky will hold the following activities/events:

 

8:00 am – 5:00 pm – Constitution Day Essay Contest

  • Essays, limited to 500 words, will be submitted electronically via bit.ly/sckyconstitutionessay. The topic will be: What is the Three-Fifths Clause and how has it set the trajectory of race relations in America that still affect us today?  
  • Cash/gift card prizes for 1st place ($100), 2nd place ($50), 3rd place ($25). The three winners will receive their awards at the first Convocation on September 26th, 2017.

8:00 am – until – Coffee and Doughnuts over the Constitution

  • Students will be given copies of the Constitution over coffee and doughnuts. Additionally, students will be able to gain some inspiration for their essay.

12:00 pm – 12:50 pm – Panel Discussion Sponsored by: Student Government Association

  • SGA will host a panel discussion about The Constitution and the state of our country from the perspective of an HBCU student. The panel discussion will be led by our SGA President, LaVonda Boyd. The Topic will be: The Constitution and The HBCU: A Student Perspective
